Getting Here.

There’s nothing like driving up to Libby on that great American road trip through some of the most beautiful parts of Northwest Montana. Just point your rig 180 degrees from the expected. Stunning peaks rise in the distance. In the meantime, there’s a good chance you’ll spot some wildlife. In other words, it’s hard to keep your eyes on the road. Good thing we’ve got some alternative options.

Getting to Libby is easier than ever before. If you prefer to let someone else do the driving, convenient local train service is provided by Amtrak from both east and west. Known as the Empire Builder Train, Amtrak’s route travels daily between Chicago and the Pacific Northwest through majestic wilderness, following in the footsteps of many early pioneers.

Additionally, if you’re coming from farther afield — kudos on that decision — consider flying into Kalispell (FCA) or Missoula (MSO) in Montana, or Spokane (GEG) right across the Idaho panhandle in Washington. From any direction, heading toward Libby is full of unforgettable scenery rather than cars and other traffic.

Last but not least, Libby’s private airport offers a no-landing-fee option for independent pilots and chartered planes. With a fair share of adventure seekers heading our way, we know the importance of the details. So here they are: The airport’s elevation is 2,601 feet and is rated as B-II (large by State Aviation Standards). It has a 5,000-foot-long, 75-foot-wide asphalt runway with a connecting paved taxiway, which is 200 feet x 35 feet. The paved apron is 10,000 square yards with hangars and 15 tie downs. Facilities at the airport include a lighted beacon, segmented circle and wind cone, MIRL and PAPI on both ends. Oh, and the views are pretty stellar, too.
